Escondido Union School District excels at sourcing local produce for their district’s school meal program. Partnering with local farmers such as Sundial Farms and Rio Del Rey Heirloom Beans, Escondido is committed to sourcing fresh, healthy and local food to their families and students.

Menu items are determined by what grows seasonally in San Diego County through the Harvest of the Month Calendar, and the district is dedicated to providing their students with plant-based menu items and healthy A-Z salad bars. Cafeteria managers visit preschool classrooms to teach about fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes to promote health and wellness at an early age. Escondido Union has a total of 14 school gardens, which including native plant, hydroponic and vegetable gardening methods.
